Hi! My name is John Gilpatrick, and I’m a jack of all trades, as long as those trades involve writing, editing, talking, or interwebbing. Don’t ask me to fix a flat. I can’t dance. And for the love of God, don’t let me around a hammer. Bad things happen.
But I write and edit and talk and interweb with the best of them. After graduating from Lehigh University with a degree in journalism and international relations, I took my talents to Rodale, Inc. For the Men’s Health brand, I wrote and edited original content and repurposed magazine content in creative ways for nearly five years. I also managed the e-mail newsletter schedule, social media, ad placement, fulfillment of ad campaigns, native ads and sponsored content, back-end and front-end development, and internal product placement (DVDs, books, etc.) across the site, which attracted 13.5 million monthly unique visitors at its peak during my tenure.
In 2015, I returned to my alma mater as a communications specialist for the Lehigh University Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. There, I created original editorial and marketing content to promote the department, its 22 faculty, students, and alumni. I created a new e-mail newsletter and planned a weekend-long celebration for the department’s and university’s 150th anniversary. I also managed website and social media updates and the creation of original video content.
While still in college, I created the website JohnLikesMovies.com, where I regularly posted movie reviews and other film-related content. Through it, I became a member of the Online Film Critics Society and started the It’s the Pictures Podcast with fellow film writer Max Covill. I’ve also had the opportunity to write on a freelance basis about film for outlets such as Popular Mechanics, The Week, The Cinessential, and PopOptiq.com, among others.
In 2017, I left my full-time job at Lehigh and became a full-time freelance writer, editor, and website consultant. Outside of the film world, I have additional clips on MensHealth.com, PetMD.com, PawCulture.com, Chewy.com, Spartan Race, Silver Sneakers, and LuckyVitamin.com, among others. I also ghost wrote business-to-business content.
On the editing and consulting side, I worked for Sonima.com to manage its content calendar and newsletters, edit stories, and launch a sister brand called Elev8d Fitness, a subscription service that featured workout videos to improve your postural alignment. We built a platform from scratch, marketed the workouts, created original content to promote them, held events, and integrated the brand with Sonima.com.
In 2019, I consulted for Lehigh Valley Health Network as it launched a new website, and after launch, I joined the team full-time to manage its SEO efforts and location schema, as well as web, media, and social media analytics. I also helped launch an internal communications program on the Social Chorus platform.
